This question is from a member of our community that wishes to remain anonymous:
Looking for some governance advice! We are a small charity who run a community centre from the building that the local authority own. Our Trustees have historically welcomed the locally elected councillors in the locale of the centre, as Trustees to serve on the Board. However as time goes on it is more difficult to attract Trustees and with four local councillors elected, it is possible that they could hold majority vote being pushed through on an item which may or may not be politically influenced by the councillors.
Currently our governing document holds that locally elected councillors for the ward should serve as Trustees, and whilst this was advantageous in the past, due to the small number of Trustees the problem is obvious. We wish to change our governing document to say that Locally elected councillors are welcome to attend GCMs' as observers/community advisors, but with no voting power. Although there is nothing in our lease that says the councillors should be Trustees, the local authority democratic services says that they should serve as full Trustees.
Does anyone have any experience of this or shed any light on where we stand if we should change the governing document accordingly? Many thanks in advance!
