Advice on evaluating Conflicts of Interest

Hi All, I'm new here so grateful to join. I have a quick question please. I am supporting a charity who are making some major changes. The current CEO wants to resign, but remain connected to the charity so wants to join the trustee board.
All the trustees want this too as he would bring great added value. Is this allowed and if so does there need to be a period of time in between or can it happen straight away?
any professional advice on this would be gratefully appreciated.
